MASTER CLASS with Sarah Spackman
News in today about Sarah Spackman’s election as an Associate Member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters; fantastic news, well deserved and very well done.
I am absolutely delighted to have been elected as an associate member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, AROI, and to be part of such a wonderful society dedicated solely to oil painting. I have been exhibiting with the society for a number of years and I have always loved using oil paint, for me, it is the best medium. I love the range and depth of colour it allows, and its great flexibility. I feel very honoured to have been elected by fellow oil painters, so many thanks to all those who voted for me, and I am very much looking forward to being part of the ROI. SARAH SPACKMAN AROI

Sarah Spackman’s strength of drawing and the delicate and subtle use of colour are two of the main qualities recognised in her work. Her practise focuses on the principle that good drawing is the basis of good painting and that colour should be used to enhance the organisation and definition of observed space and form. Sarah works in a considered way, with close observation. Her paintings are quiet in their presence but nonetheless powerful and engaging to the viewer. These are paintings that take a close look at things around us, take the object out of the ordinary and make the viewer look again.
This course is open to anyone who would like to learn about, or to improve their colour mixing skills and to refresh their thoughts on composition.
What to expect on this Colour and Composition course
This will be a 2 day workshop painting with oils.
The first day, we will have a discussion around the nature of still life and look at work by other artists. Students will then build their own simple still life set ups from materials provided. They will develop a series of studies to address drawing, composition, tonal and colour relationships separately before the final painting. These studies will be in charcoal, conte and oil paint. These preparatory explorations will enable the students to approach their paintings with greater understanding and confidence.
The second day, will be a full day painting the still life, with oils.
All abilities are welcome but some experience of working with oil paint would be preferable.
You will need to bring the following:
